Ledford Grants

    • The Colonel Lee B. Ledford Awards are given to students in a variety of fields, including English, sociology, history, computer science and religious studies. These awards are administered by the Appalachian College Association in an effort to fund student projects such as laboratory work, field work and analyzing collections.

    Student Eligibility

    • In order to apply for the 2010 Colonel Lee B. Ledford Awards, the student was required to be a full-time student at an ACA institution. The individual must return to the institution for one semester after the completion of the research term. The student is required to have a degree from a high school or homeschool designated Appalachian by the Appalachian Regional Commission. A full list of these schools is available on the Appalachian College Association website. Finally, applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

    Project Eligibility

    • Colonel Lee B. Ledford Awards are presented to winning students with eligible projects. These projects must have the endorsement of a member of the faculty and the chief academic officer. No more than two Ledford students may participate in any one project. The Ledford funding may go to travel under the condition that a faculty member accompanies the award recipient. Mission trips and class trips are excluded from eligibility.

    Ledford Award Application

    • A student filling out an application must submit a budget, project description, biographical sketch, statement of interest and a letter from the faculty member sponsoring the project. Once awarded, the student will receive $8.50 an hour up to a maximum of $5,120. Recipients can also use up to $1,000 for travel expenses for all approved travel. The application deadline for each year's awards is set by the Appalachian College Association. The application deadline for 2010 was January 4, 2010.

    Responsibilities of Recipients

    • Recipients of the Colonel Lee B. Ledford awards are required to attend the ACA Student Summit, where the student will present a poster and report the outcomes of the research conducted with the grant money. The 2010 ACA Student Summit is scheduled to take place on Friday, October 22, 2010. Winning students are also required to submit a final report by November 12, 2010. The final report must contain an annotated bibliography of all library research.
