Function

• Each post sponsors its own scholarship awards, but the basic function for all the scholarships is to provide an engineering student with an award to help defray the costs of college. Depending on the award, the scholarship money may be used for tuition or for room, board and other expenses.
  
  

Types

• Scholarships vary by post on the amount of the award, but most of the posts award scholarships of $1,000 to $3,000 per recipient. The number of awards each post gives out also varies depending on the post's membership numbers. For example, the Mississippi Gulf Coast chapter only awards one scholarship a year, while the Washington, D.C., post offers 10 scholarships a year.
  
  

Features

• Each scholarship comes with its own special features, and many of the scholarships are named after prominent current or former members of that post. Across the board, scholarships are only awarded to students studying engineering, architecture, environmental, biological or military science or a similar degree. Some of the awards have other stipulations like what school you attend. For example, the Tulsa Post scholarship can only go to students attending six specific Oklahoma schools.
  
  

Qualifications

• Qualifications also vary from award to award, but generally applicants must hold a certain grade point average, usually 3.0 or above, be affiliated with that particular post and be enrolled full-time at an accredited college. Most awards require applicants to submit a scholarship application, essay, letters of recommendation and transcripts. Scholarship recipients may also be required to attend an award ceremony or formal meeting of that particular post to accept the award.
  
  

Time Frame

• Most of the awards have deadlines for applying in late spring with scholarships awarded in early summer. Other applications are due as early as March with awards handed out by April. To apply for any of the scholarships, an applicant should visit the website for the SAME post nearest to them to download the application and find out the requirements for that post's awards.
