How to Reduce the Scar From a C-Section
- 1). Use vitamin E oil. Vitamin E oil is often recommended by both holistic healers and medical doctors. While studies on vitamin E oil reveal there is no evidence that the oil is a scar treatment, many people provide anecdotal claims that the oil works on a wide range of scars. In his article "Scarring," Dr. Joel Studin, a plastic surgeon, notes that he recommends vitamin E oil to his patients. He believes the vitamin E breaks down the collagen strands that create the scar tissue. Thus, the oil helps to wear away the scar over time.
- 2). Have a chemical peel. Doctors perform chemical peels, but there are also at-home peel kits. Chemical peels use solutions that burn the top layer of the skin and then the new skin replaces the scarred skin. The article "Chemical Peel" on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website writes that the chemicals used are alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). These chemicals help to fade discolorations so the C-section scar is less noticeable. The at-home chemical kits use milder concentrations of the same chemicals. You can purchase them from a beauty supply store. Follow directions carefully.
- 3). Use ScarGuard MD. ScarGuard MD is a scar treatment formula developed by a plastic surgeon. Originally, this lotion was only available by prescription, but it is now an over-the-counter lotion that costs about $70. ScarGuard MD contains silicone and cortisone. The ScarGuard MD website states that ScarGuard MD is best for raised or thick scars like hypertrophic scars or keloids. The scar from a C-section takes a few forms, depending on the individual's propensity for forming scar tissue. Follow the direction on the label. For most scars the lotion should be applied one or two times a day for several weeks.
- 4). Have a dermabrasion. A doctor performs dermabrasion in the office. The article "Dermabrasion" on the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery website writes that "the doctor then mechanically removes or "sands" the skin to improve the contour and achieve a rejuvenated appearance" when the new layer of skin appears. This medical procedure uses a small wire brush to scrap off the damaged skin. Dermabrasion is good for raised scars. Several treatments of dermabrasion are usually needed for removing the scar.
