Video: Teaching Culinary Math Skills to Children
Video Transcript
Hi. I'm Chelsea Duggan, curriculum designer, with Milestar Babies, and today we're teaching culinary math skills to children. In this activity, we'll be making parfaits. Parfaits are a great way to teach measuring, pouring, dividing and substituting. In this activity, you'll need a clear glass, some yogurt, some cereal, assorted bowls of fruit, measuring cups and spoons. This activity is great because its very flexible. You can have the children decide what measurements they'd like to use and record them on paper. You can also have them use each measurement once or you can have them match measurements, for example, have all the fruit measurements be the same. Start by adding a layer of cereal to your glass; next, spoon in some yogurt. Allow the children to choose a fruit layer next. After a layer of fruit, add another layer of yogurt. Next, put another layer of cereal. And, finally, top off with a layer of fruit. The great thing about this activity is you can substitute ingredients. You could use ice cream or various fruits to satisfy anyone's taste buds. I'm Chelsea Duggan, with Milestar Babies, and this is teaching culinary math skills to children.
