Parts of a Good Alarm System

    Security Horn

    • People generally do not pay attention to security alarms, as witnessed by how often a car alarm sounds in a parking lot, while those in the vicinity ignore it and go about their business. A much better choice is to wire up a security system to a loud horn. Not only will the deafening noise draw more attention than a standard alarm, it is more likely to scare off an intruder than a standard alarm.

    Shunt Switch

    • A shunt switch allows you to place a sensor on a window or door, allowing them to be opened if you were to accidentally set off your wireless alarm system. You must reset the switch when resetting the alarm---which will almost certainly result in a few false alarms---however, the freedom it affords may be worth the price.

    Broken Glass Detector

    • A broken glass detector can be set to detect even the most minute vibration on the glass. An intruder---attempting to get into your house by shattering a glass window or the glass inset of an exterior door---will be met by a sudden alarm. The more sophisticated and expensive models can even detect a burglar attempting to use a glass cutter.

    Ultrasonic Detector

    • An ultrasonic detector scans a large interior area to detect movement. If a burglar does manage to gain access to the inside of your home without setting off an alarm, the ultrasonic device will kick in by sensing disturbances of ultrasonic waves caused by human movement.

    Panic Button

    • A panic button is especially useful for the elderly, infirm and disabled. This security device sets off an alarm and also contacts security personnel who can send help immediately. You also can install a panic button that sets off the exterior alarm, which failed to go off when the intruder broke into your house.

    Master Control Panel

    • The master control panel is where all the wiring comes together. From the master control panel you can set the alarm, set it to turn on at a specific time--such as when you are away---and turn off an alarm that has gone prematurely. The master control is best located in a master bedroom or any room where you spend the majority of your evening hours.

    Remote Master Control

    • A remote master control allows you to do everything that can be done using the main master control panel, but from another room. Some alarm systems can even be controlled via the Internet. You can even get a remote control device that you can carry with you at all times.
