Practical Tips on How to Clean Your Dog"s Bed

OUTDOOR DOG BEDS
Most outdoor beds are designed to resist water damage and for this reason you may be able to get away with simply hosing down the bed and blasting all the dirt and hair away.
However, some outdoor beds have removable covers and do allow you to machine wash the cover so it's always a good idea to check with the suggested cleaning instructions especially in regard to the temperature of the wash cycle as washing at higher than the recommended temperature for may cause the dye to run in some bed covers
INDOOR DOG BEDS
For an indoor dog bed there are normally removable covers that can be machine washed on a low temperature and some even allow you to put the cover in the dryer on a low heat setting.
For dog beds which have both a cushion cover as well as a cover for the body of the bed you may find you only need to was the cushion cover regularly as this is what the dog is lying on and the body cover may only need to be washed every couple of months. For this reason its a good idea to purchase an extra cushion cover to put on while you are washing the other cover so the dog can still use their bed.
How you wash the inside of the dog bed will depend on the filling. Some beds are made from a complete piece of foam that may need to be hosed whereas other pet beds may have pieces of foam inside an insert cover. Often the foam pieces are designed for washing and you can put the whole insert cover with the foam in a large commercial washing machine. If you are unsure if the foam pieces can be washed you can empty the foam pieces into a large garbage bag and wash the insert cover separately. Its rare that the insert or the foam needs to be washed however you might want to freshen up the bed or the dog may have had an accident that requires the whole bed to be cleaned.
Another consideration for doggie ordour is to consider an odour eliminating bed which has a specially designed filter to absorb dog odours. These types of beds reduce the amount of washing required so may be worthwhile considering for your next bed.
Note: While most beds can be easily cleaned through the above process, some manufacturers create their beds in ways that require special care. Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning your bed if they differ from the above - failure to do so could ruin the bed instead of cleaning it.
