Finding a Job

Finding a job can seem pretty difficult in today's economic climate, unemployment is high compared to historical averages but on the plus side there are probably more different ways of finding a job than ever before. Here are some mainstream methods of finding a job:

Employment Agencies

Employment agencies make their money by filling available positions with employees. When businesses have a vacancy, they will often inform an employment agency, offering them a fee if they can fill the position. The employment agencies will then look to fill that position, by going through various potential employees that they have on their books. If you are looking for work, then contacting employment agencies can be a really efficient way of finding a job, as the agency has an incentive to put you into employment- they get a fee from their clients if they can fill an empty position. Even if they have nothing suitable, employment agencies might be able to point you in the direction of available jobs.

Newspapers

Newspapers used to be one of the biggest areas for job advertising and although many more job adverts are available online, newspapers are still a great place to look for jobs. Jobs tend to be listed towards the back of newspapers, though some newspapers have a dedicated jobs section. The great thing about looking for a job in newspapers is that you can look at different newspapers to look at a greater range of jobs. Looking in your local newspaper in particular can help you find jobs in your local area that might have less competition than those jobs advertised in national papers.

Word of Mouth

Word of mouth is a much underrated job finding technique- if you are looking for work just tell as many people as possible that you are looking for a work. Many jobs offered by small businesses will not be advertised in the media or online, so asking around might lead you to a job that others might not find. Also, just by telling as many people as possible you are improving your chances of finding out about an available position. Even if the people you talk to don't know of anything available, they might just give you a call if anything comes up around where they work and the more people you tell, the greater your chances of hearing about something.

Online Job Sites

Over the past few years, more and more job adverts have gone online. Searching for a job online is in many ways much more efficient than looking for one through a newspaper, as many online job sites have screening tools that allow you to choose criteria, so you only look at those jobs which you are likely to consider applying for. For example, you could search for jobs that fall within a certain salary bracket, or look at those located within a certain distance of your home. It can be particularly helpful to combine criteria- you might only be interested in part time jobs in london [http://www.parttimejobsinlondon.org] for example, so you would search for jobs that are part-time and are located in or near London.
