How to Fix a Pool Pump
- 1). Check the outlet. The pump may not be working because of a problem with the power source or breaker. Examine the breaker and switches to make sure power is running to the pump.
- 2). Power down the pump if you hear the motor humming then stopping. Remove the housing bolts or clamp to take the pump housing apart. Pull the impeller diffuser loose. If it's fastened together, unscrew the fasteners. The impeller may be clogged with debris. The obstruction should fall out. Make the impeller spin by hand. If there is a grinding noise, something may be stuck in the impeller. If it wobbles, the impeller may be warped from heat and must be replaced.
- 3). Clean the filter to improve the efficiency of the pool pump. Replace it if it's in really bad condition. Look in the skimmer basket to see if debris is clogging the pump.
- 4). Listen for a grinding noise. The pump motor bearings may be frozen in place, preventing the motor shaft from moving, or they may have failed entirely. Replace the pool pump motor if that's the case.
- 5). Add water to the pool if the pump is not running well and taking in air instead of water. A damaged door on the skimmer weir can cause air to get into the system. Also, make sure that the pump basket lid is on tight and examine the O-ring on the lid of the pump. Lubricate it and make sure there are no cracks.
- 6). Take the motor off the pump if it's noisy. If the motor makes noise when it isn't attached, the motor itself must be replaced. If it becomes quiet, there probably is a clogged line.
