How to Make a Tied Wedding Bouquet

    • 1). Spread the roses on a worktable. Inspect them for dry, diseased or damaged parts, and snip those off with sharp scissors. Also remove the thorns and discard.

    • 2). Measure 7 to 9 inches on one rose stem and cut the excess length off with sharp knife, making a diagonal cut. Using this first stem as a guide, trim the excess stems from all the roses to ensure they are the same length. Immerse the rose stems in a bucket of cool water for up to 20 minutes.

    • 3). Stand in front of a mirror and hold two pairs of roses parallel to each other so they form a square. Make sure the blooms are at the same level. These four roses form the central or focal flowers of the bouquet. Grasp the stems firmly and wrap a length of floral tape around the center to bind the flowers together.

    • 4). Add roses one by one around the central flowers of the bouquet until the top resembles a dome. Hold the stems firmly to prevent them from shifting. These filler flowers add color and volume to the bouquet. Keep the blooms one-quarter-inch lower than the central flowers. Assess how the bouquet looks from the top and in the reflection in the mirror, and adjust accordingly.

    • 5). Wrap floral tape around the center of all the stems, over the previous tape, to secure them. Snip off excess length to ensure the stems of the filler flowers are identical in length to those of the central blooms.

    • 6). Add greenery such as baby's breath, ferns or magnolia leaves around the roses. Although not necessary, greenery frames the bouquet and gives it contrasting color so the blooms stand out. Wrap tape around these stems to secure the greenery to the bouquet. Wind it 2 to 3 inches below the previous bind.

    • 7). Measure and cut color-complementing lace or ribbon three times the length of the stems. Place an edge below one of the roses and push a corsage pin through to fasten it. Wrap it around the stems of the roses and greenery, pulling it taut. Overlap the edges as you continue working your way toward the end of the stems. Insert a corsage pin to secure the ribbon to the lower end, and trim the excess with scissors.
