Nighttime Creatures

106 45
I'm an eighteen-year-old who has lived all over the U.S., including North Carolina, Oregon, Louisiana, and Kentucky. My entire life, I've been able to see, hear, smell, and feel things other people don't. I've heard stories of the terrible night terrors I had as an infant.

My earliest memories of seeing these creatures are from elementary school. I would and still do lie awake for hours on end because I heard them all over.

I could feel their presence, but only a few of them ever let me see glimpses of them.

One night, when I was probably 11 or 12, I was lying in bed very late at night. I had just woken up, and the air around me seemed thick and cold. I was terribly dazed, and horrified to learn that a pair of large, strong hands were holding me down by the neck and the shoulders. I couldn't struggle, and my face was pressed into my pillow, so breathing was becoming more and more difficult. It seemed to last forever, but it somehow also seemed to take only a few seconds, because right when I was about to give up and let it suffocate me, it let me go. I bolted upright, but I don't remember any of what happened the rest of that night, only being awake the next morning.

We had to move because of that, and although I've never felt that specific presence again, another one replaced it -- one that I can sometimes see and that has never been outright hostile toward me. It gets possessive at times. It struts about the apartment I live in now like it owns the place, and pulls on my hair and sits at the edge of my bed.

Maybe creepiest of all is its obsession with my closet and my bathroom. This one is one of the many that have followed me to different locations, and its intentions aren't really clear. It can be relaxed and curious, and it can be downright intimidating.

There are two others that have come around recently, as well. One just observes, while the newest one is probably the most openly aggressive that I've ever run into. He's already hissed at me, I've had the feeling of him charging at me before I slammed the door in his face. He once got so upset that I shut him in a room (even though I'm pretty sure he could go through the walls if he really wanted to because the others can do it), he started pounding on the other side of the wall right above where my head was with his fists. It's only been maybe a week and a half with him.

Since I've known these creatures my entire life, I've grown used to them. But going by what I've seen of them, they aren't human in any way and don't really experience or react to human emotions as we know them. And there is something so deeply unsettling about that that I don't think I'll ever fully understand.
