According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), an airplane passenger may only transport firearms, ammunition and firearms parts in checked baggage. These items are strictly forbidden on the plane in carry-on baggage. The TSA further maintains that the firearm must be in a hard-sided, locked case, with the firearm unlocked. Every airline has their own rules regarding firearms that may go above and beyond what the TSA has laid out for regulations, but many airlines, such as Delta, require that the passenger declare they have a locked firearm case before handing it to the airline representative, and give them the keys while sigining a declaration that the firearm is unloaded. Below is a sampling of the available cases that are approved by the TSA and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to be used to transport firearms on an airplane.

Armloc II Magnum Handgun Safety System

    • Fully compliant with both the FAA and the General Services Administration (GSA), the Armlock features a kevlar case which is six times stronger than steel, as well as a dual locking system, with both a combination and a key that are needed to open the case. This case is often used by the Department of Homeland Security, and has added features to allow it to attach to a bed, car or wall, so that the case itself cannot be stolen.

Americase AT1813L Pistol / Utility Case

    • The AT1813L is made of aluminum, and can be used for pistols, cameras or other utilities. The case is part of Americase's Aluma-trans line of products, which are designed for versatility and customization. The latches on the case can be padlocked, offering additional security for valuables.

    Cabela's "Bullet Proof" Case

    • A quality case intended for airline travel, Cabela's "Bullet Proof" case features a weather seal to insure that the firearm is appropriately protected while in flight or traveling in any conditions that may harm a firearm. Made of marine-grade aluminum, all the latches and hinges are heavy-duty to provide extra security. The passenger does not need to worry about buying a TSA-approved lock prior to going to the airport, as the locks on the case are already TSA-approved.
