How to Change the Holder's Name on Company Stock
- 1). Obtain the most recent brokerage statement for the stock to determine the value and to have the right information available when contacting your broker.
- 2). Call the number on the statement to ask your broker how your certificates are held. The stocks are held either in the brokerage's name or in your name. It depends on the firm's custody policies, which brokers go over with clients upon opening the account.
- 3). Request a form to have your stocks, whether in physical form or held by the broker, transferred. If the stocks are in the broker's name, he will need to transfer the stock to physical stock certificates first and will need your approval to do so.
- 4). Sign the back of each physical stock certificate, like a check. This transfers ownership to the recipient of the certificate. You can also request from your broker a stock power document to fill out if you're uncomfortable handling or sending the signed stock certificates.
