How to Do Linoleum Carving Blocks
- 1). Draw your chosen design in reverse of how you want it to appear on a sheet of tracing or drawing paper.
- 2). Tape a piece of carbon paper, carbon side down, on your linoleum block.
- 3). Place the drawing centered over the carbon paper, drawing side up.
- 4). Trace the outline of your drawing using a pen or pencil. Press firmly down to ensure that the drawing transfers onto the linoleum surface.
- 5). Remove the carbon paper and drawing paper from the surface of your linoleum block. You should now be able to clearly see your drawing.
- 6). Carve out all of the areas that are not part of your design. Vary the depth and pressure of your strokes and gouges to create different textures.
- 7). Ensure that the background is an even depth so that once the ink is applied it transfers uniformly to the printing surface. You can now use your carved block as desired.
