In 1937 Chevrolet introduced its first modern light-truck series that shared styling traits with its passenger cars, according to PickupTruck.com, a collector-truck website. The base vehicle of the 1937 light-truck line was the half-ton pickup. That vehicle and the rest of the light-truck line featured a redesigned cab offering improved driver comfort and convenience with instruments and controls clustered for ease of use. - The 1937 Chevy half-ton pickup was powered by a liquid-cooled, six-cylinder, in-line, cast-iron, overhead valve engine displacing 216.5 cubic inches, according to Chevy Old Car Manual Project. It was rated at 76 horsepower and 170 foot-pounds of torque. It featured GM's "Blue Flame" combustion chamber design.
- The engine drove the rear wheels through a manual transmission offering three forward speeds and one reverse with synchronous meshing second and third gear, connected to the engine by a single-plate dry clutch, said GM. The transmission connected to the semi-floating rear drive axle via a steel drive shaft. The truck had an 18-gallon fuel capacity and a six-volt, negative-ground electrical system powered by an on-board generator.
- The 1937 Chevy pickup had a steel channel frame and five cross members, with a steel cab and bed attached to the frame. Front suspension was a steel I-beam, solid axle with a semi-elliptic leaf spring at each end. The rear axle also hung from semi-elliptic leaf springs at each end. The chassis had a single-acting hydraulic shock absorber at each wheel. The truck had manual worm-and-sector steering gear, and four-wheel manual hydraulic drum brakes. It rode on four 8 by 16 tires mounted on 16-inch steel wheels.
- The 1937 Chevy half-ton pickup was 183.5 inches long with a 112-inch wheelbase. It was 70.5 inches wide and was 74 inches high. The steel bed was 78 inches long, 45.75 inches wide and 14 inches deep. It weighed 2,945 lbs. The steel cab had a bench seat and could seat three people. The truck came with a complete tool kit, tire pump and starting crank for emergencies.
