How to Remove Sulfur From a Chlorinator System

    • 1). Take a sample of the water to a local water treatment plant. The water treatment plant can identify the substances in the water that are creating the sulfur smell, usually hydrogen sulfide. The water treatment plant will identify the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the water, which is necessary for treatment.

    • 2). Add 2 mg of chlorine for every 1 mg of hydrogen sulfide in the water. Add the chlorine to the filtration system. Let the chlorine sit in the water for 20 minutes before allowing the water to pass through the rest of the filter.

    • 3). Place an oxidizing sulfur filter below each water line. This filter will remove additional sulfur from the water, up to 2 parts per million. This will eliminate any residual sulfur smell that the chlorine filter cannot eliminate.

    • 4). Attach a catalytic carbon filter to the faucet in the kitchen for drinking water. This carbon filter will stop any remaining sulfur particles from entering the water and produce water with a clean, fresh taste. This filter will also remove other contaminants from the water.
