How to Pick Nits
- 1). Purchase a metal nit comb, such as the LiceMeister for the most efficient removal.
- 2). Treat hair with head louse shampoo, followed by regular shampoo and conditioner. Rinse the hair with very hot water before attacking with the comb.
- 3). Have the person sit under a direct light source so that you may spot nits easily.
- 1). Start at the crown of the head, separating a 1 1/2 inch section of hair.
- 2). Hold the section of hair out from the head and run the comb through slowly, starting as close to the base of the head as possible.
- 3). Slant the curved side of the teeth on the comb toward the head as you run it through the hair.
- 4). Use a tissue to clean nits from the comb. Dispose of the tissue in the plastic bag.
- 5). Continue to comb through the section of hair until it is free of nits.
- 1). Pin the cleaned section of hair out of the way and separate another section.
- 2). Continue to comb until the whole head of hair is done.
- 3). Rinse the hair with water and let it dry thoroughly.
- 4). Spot check and remove any lingering nits individually by hand after the hair has dried.
- 1). Soak the comb in hot soapy ammonia water for at least 15 minutes. (Ref. 2.)
- 2). Boil the comb in water for 15 minutes. (Ref. 2.)
- 3). Dispose of the plastic bag.
