How to Get a Cosmetology License in Texas

    • 1). Ensure that you satisfy the basic requirements. Applicant's for a cosmetology license must be at least 17 years of age with a high school diploma or a GED.

    • 2). Register for a cosmetology course at a state-licensed beauty school. You must complete 1500 hours in the program for an operator license, 750 hours for a facialist license or 600 hours for a manicurist license. Hair weaving specialists require 300 hours, hair braiding candidates need 35 hours and wig-making applicants must complete 300 hours of instruction.

    • 3). Obtain information about the cosmetology examination(s) you intend to take. Candidate Information Bulletins are available for download from the website for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (see Resources below).

    • 4). Complete an application for a license and submit it to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation with the applicable fee (see Resources below). You will be eligible to sit for the exam when the department has received proof that you have completed the course requirements. The cosmetology exam consists of written and practical sections. The hair braiding specialist certificate does not require an examination.

    • 5). Register for the cosmetology examination. PSI administers the exam. You can register on line with PSI, the company responsible for administering cosmetology examinations in Texas (see Resources below). You may also register by phone, fax or standard mail.

    • 6). Take the examination. Show a state-issued ID to be gain admission. You must pass the written part of the exam to be eligible for the practical exam. You should arrive for the exam with the items necessary for a practical demonstration of cosmetology services in your specialty. You model should be at least 16 years old and may need parental approval. You must achieve a passing grade of at least 70 percent in each section of the examination to pass.

    • 7). Wait for your license. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation will mail your license to you.
