How to Apply Two-Tone Eye Shadow
- 1). Choose two complementary colors; the colors you select are a personal choice. If you want warm, natural colors, choose peach and brown or light green and brown. If you prefer cool tones, try light blue with navy blue. Another cool duo is light blue and purple. For neutral tones a light gray and a charcoal gray would be nice. Choose a light color to brighten up the eyes, and a darker color for contrast and depth. If you have trouble doing this, most brands like Cover Girl and Maybelline offer duo eye shadows. Many brands offer three or four shadows of light, medium and dark colors to mix and match. Use your preferred type of eye shadow--power, cream or pencil. Choose between matte or iridescent.
- 2). Use a mirror. While lighted makeup mirrors are great, especially the ones with lighting for different situations like day, office and evening, a simple mirror with a base is really all that is required.
- 3). Put foundation or moisturizer on the eyelids. This gives the eyelids a smooth base to apply the eye shadows and helps the shadows stay in place. Let the base coat dry before applying the shadow.
- 4). Apply the lighter color first. Place this on your entire lid, and if the color is flesh toned (beige, tan or brown) you can extend this color up to the brow bone. Another option is to apply this color to the inner half of the lid. This opens up the eyes. Use a sponge tip application or an eye shadow brush. Many professional makeup artists prefer the brush because it gives more control over the amount of shadow applied.
- 5). Apply the darker color. Put this color in the crease of the eye to add depth to your eye. Or put the darker color on the outer corner of your eye in a horizontal V-shape. Another technique is to dip the tip of the applicator or brush in the shadow and then use it to line the upper lid. Get as close to the lashes as possible. Still another option is to apply the darker-colored eye shadow to the outer half of the lids.
- 6). Make adjustments. After you have applied the make-up, look in the mirror to see if the makeup is symmetrical. If there is too much makeup on one eye, adjust this with a cotton swab dipped in water.
