Most of us would agree that cockroaches are a frustrating pest that needs to be taken care of. The best way to eliminate them from your home is by calling a professional pest control company, but once they're out, how do we make sure they stay out and never come back? Unfortunately, removing the roaches is only half the battle, with nearly the same amount of work required afterwards to ensure they stay gone. Read these tips for some of the more common cockroach characteristics and the best ways to prevent them.

Clean Up Your Home And Keep Those Roaches Hungry!

By limiting the food and water supply around the house for roaches, 9/10 times they will look to migrate to another area where it is easier to gather and feed. However, in some cases it may just make them more resourceful in the way they obtain their food. Keeping your home clean is a great first step to keeping roaches out, but it's not the last. Remember to sweep and vacuum often, particularly after meal times under the dinner table and surrounding furniture.

Wiping down the benches is important too, getting under appliances to make sure there are no crumbs lying around. If you have any leftover food, make sure you store it in sealed containers and put them away in a pantry or fridge.

Bins without a lid are great for bringing roaches back to your home. Make sure every bin has a sealed lid and when it's full, tie the bag and take it out straight away. The final food related item to think about is pet food. If you feed your pets inside, make sure you clean their bowl after every meal. If they don't finish their food, take it away and dispose of it. Cockroaches will eat just about any sort of food they can get hold of, so we can't leave anything to chance.

Their Food Is Gone - Now Time For The Water!

Your kitchen is the mail trouble spot for roaches as it contains both food and water, however bathrooms and laundries are also danger zones. Every variety of cockroach needs water to survive, in fact, water is more essential to them than food. For this reason, they are drawn to damp places.

Avoid leaving standing water anywhere, whether it's in bathtubs, sinks or even in the mopping bucket. Check all your pipes and faucets regularly to make sure they don't have any leaks. Pipes under the cupboards is the most common place people find roaches, especially in the kitchen where there is often a bin for food as well.

If you've got a cockroach problem in your home, then it's always best to have it sorted by a professional before taking the above steps to prevent more coming along.
