Snow Activities for School

104 27
    • Snow transforms the school yard into a winter wonderland. It also provides many opportunities for educational and entertaining classroom activities. The snow theme works well any time during the winter months, particularly if you live in a snowy climate. Classroom snow activities let the kids dig in and experience snow in new ways.

    State of Matter

    • Snow lends itself well to a science experiment on the state of matter. This snow science experiment transforms the snow into different states. It starts as a solid but quickly turns to a liquid and then a gas when heated in a pan. Unless you're working with older students, you'll need to handle the heating process. The students draw a diagram showing how the snow changes through the different states of matter as heat is applied.

    Evaporation

    • Another scientific experiment with snow relates to evaporation and the water cycle. Collect snow in clear plastic cups, marking the level of the snow on the side of the cup. The snow-filled cups sit in a warm spot in the classroom until the snow melts. Mark the level of the water that results from the melted snow. Continue monitoring the level of the water to check for evaporation. Document the time it takes for the snow to melt and fully evaporate. You can also gather icicles and compare them to the snow in terms of volume and evaporation time.

    Sensory Table

    • Snow makes a fitting seasonal addition to a sensory table in a preschool or elementary classroom. The kids feel the snow and manipulate it with tools such as sand shovels and miniature rakes. Wearing gloves while playing in the sensory table keeps little hands from freezing. You can also mix some food coloring with water and place it in a spray bottle so the kids can color the snow.

    Snow Ice Cream

    • Clean snow makes a delicious snack that fits the theme. Each child collects clean snow in a bowl. Make sure you supervise the snow collection to ensure it is clean. A little sugar and a tiny bit of vanilla extract adds flavor to the snow. Add milk to create a slushy texture that the kids can eat with a spoon. Stir up the snow ice cream and enjoy the tasty treat.
