How to Cover Foam to Make a Cushion

    • 1). Measure the sides and edges of the foam and write down the measurements. You need the length and width of each. Add to the measurements 1 inch, so that if a side of the foam is 12 inches long and 12 inches wide, you would put down 13 inches by 13 inches. The extra measurement is so that you have extra material on the ends to sew the pieces together.

    • 2). Cut out the material to fit the adjusted measurements.

    • 3). Turn two pieces of material so that the good sides of the fabric are facing each other. Work with one side of the cushion and the edge pieces that go along the edges of the foam. Set an edge piece so that it lines up with the end of the side piece. Sew a simple in-and-out stitch 1/2 inch in from the end. Repeat with each edge piece, sewing one piece along each end of the side piece.

    • 4). Sew the ends of the edge pieces together where they meet at the corners. Sew in 1/2 inch.

    • 5). Sew the other fabric side of the cushion to three of the edges. Connect it to the loose ends of the edge material. Place the side material so that the good side is facing the good side of the edge pieces. Once through, you should have two sides with thinner strips between them for the thickness of the foam. All but one end of the second side of the cushion should be sewn.

    • 6). Sew in on either end of the last open space of the cushion material. You want to sew up a total of one-third of the open length from both ends, and leave two-thirds still open.

    • 7). Turn the cushion material right-side-out through the opening.

    • 8). Squeeze the cushion through the opening and tug and pull to get it into the proper position.

    • 9). Fold the edges of the opening inward. Pinch the material and sew the pieces together as close to the edge as possible, so that the stitch lines up with stitches on the ends.
