DIY Sexy Medieval Fantasy Costumes

    • 1). Buy a velvet or velour sleeveless ankle- or floor-length dress or jumper. Thrift stores are an ideal place to obtain these. Make sure the dress or jumper fits you. If the dress is slightly too tight, it is also acceptable, as you will be changing the dimensions slightly anyway. Take note of where the hemline ends.

    • 2). Measure your leg from the hemline of the dress to the point on your leg that you want to expose.

    • 3). Mark the hem of the dress with tailor's chalk if you would like to shorten the skirt length. While mini skirts are not characteristic of the medieval period, they are perfectly acceptable for a DIY sexy medieval fantasy costume.

    • 4). Use the scissors to cut slits up both the left and right sides of the dress to the spot you marked with tailor's chalk. This not only aids in walking, but allows you to show your legs without exposing things you may not want seen.

    • 5). Fold pieces of ribbon around the cut edges of the slits you just created. Sew the ribbons in place, sandwiching the cut edges between the ribbon so that they do not unravel.

    • 6). Mark the center front or center back of the dress or jumper with tailor's chalk. You may also choose to mark both the center front and back, or the left and right sides. Do not mark past the waist of the dress.

    • 7). Pin a strip of grommet tape to both sides of the cut bodice of the dress. Sew the grommet tape in place, taking care not to sew over the grommets. Sewing over the grommets risks breaking the sewing machine's needle.

    • 8). Pin a trim of your choosing around the bottom hem of the dress. Choose a gold braided trim or a flat woven trim in a metallic color to offset the rich fabric of the velvet or velour.

    • 9). Lace pieces of ribbon through the grommets in the grommet tape. Try on the dress and adjust it as needed.

Couple the dress with the appropriate shoes. For a medieval huntress or warrior, a pair of high heeled boots and a toy sword might be used. For a princess, a pair of metallic high heels and a tiara could be added. A medieval fantasy bard might be seen with a decidedly un-medieval electric guitar. Use your imagination.

    Men

    • 1). Find a pair of pants in a dark brown or black fabric. Canvas, suede or fake leather work well for this. For a sexier look, make sure the pants fit snugly. You may also wish to dye a pair of jeans to suit your needs.

    • 2). Roll the hem of the pants up to just below the knee. Hold them in place with a large rubber band or belt cut to size to simulate the look of breeches.

    • 3). Cut out the cuffs of a dress shirt. Replace the buttons with grommet tape. Pin and sew in the tape. Lace up the front, leaving a small area open at the chest. Cotton works well for peasant looks, while polyester or silk gives the look of richer fabrics.

    • 4). Wear a pair of knee-high stockings with dress shoes to complete the basic outfit.

    • 5). Add props. A crown and scepter add a hint of royalty, while a guitar makes a suitable addition to a bard's outfit.
