Kauffman Stadium History
- When the stadium opened on April 10,1973, it was called Royals Stadium, for the team that played there. The Royals beat the Texas Rangers 12-1 in the first game, played before 39,464 fans.
- In 1973, the inaugural year of the stadium, the 40th All-Star game was played on July 24. It was Hall of Fame player Willie Mays' last All-Star game. The National League won 7-1.
- In October 1985, the Royals played their in-state rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, in the World Series. The Royals won their only World Series title with an 11-0 victory in Game 7.
- On July 2, 1993, Royals Stadium was renamed Kauffman Stadium for the man who built the team. One month after the stadium had been renamed, Kauffman died at age 76. In 2000, David Glass, a former executive with Wal-Mart, bought the team.
- Kauffman Stadium received a $250 million renovation that was completed in 2009. Known as "The K," the stadium seats 39,000 and has a Royals Hall of Fame.
