What to Do About Stretch Marks?

    Prevention

    • Preventative techniques are generally the only sure way of avoiding stretch marks. One of the best methods of prevention is rubbing cocoa butter or shea butter on the abdomen, thighs and hips every day during pregnancy or during periods of fluctuating weight. These lotions keep skin highly moisturized and elastic, thereby keeping the skin from stretching too much. It is imperative that the cocoa butter or shea butter be used on a daily basis--rub the lotion onto your skin using a circular motion and massage for about one minute to make sure it fully absorbs into the dermis.

    Topical Treatments

    • There are several topical lotions that can be used to fade stretch marks once they've formed. These include glycolic acid and vitamin E. When applied regularly to the area affected by stretch marks, these topical treatments work by repairing damaged skin cells from the inside out. Glycolic acid sloughs off dead skin cells and promotes the growth of new, healthy cells. Vitamin E works in a similar fashion to the cocoa butter by hydrating the skin and fading the stretch marks. Topical treatments must be used for at least two to three months to be fully effective.

    Surgical Options

    • Microdermabrasion, laser surgery and chemical skin peels are three effective methods of surgically removing stretch marks. These procedures must be conducted in a dermatologist's office by a professional skin esthetician. Microdermabrasion and skin peels both work by removing a thin layer of the scarred skin, and allowing new skin to grow over the affected area. Laser surgery works by using a light pulse laser to fade away dark red and purple stretch marks, but they can also be used on stretch marks once they've faded naturally to white. At least four to six treatments may be necessary to fully rid skin of the marks.

    Proper Diet

    • Stretch marks can be prevented and treated by following a balanced diet. It's imperative to drink plenty of water daily (about five to eight glasses) to keep skin hydrated. Moisturized skin is less likely to succumb to scarring when it is stretched. Caffeine is known to increase the chances of skin becoming scarred with striae. Vitamin- and protein-rich foods such as eggs, carrots, apples, fish and citrus fruits also nourish the skin, keeping it supple and soft and less likely to have stretch marks.
