Tennessee has served as an area for Christian education since the 19th century, when revival meeting and Bible studies were held by Protestant groups on the state's frontier, explains the University of Tennessee. During the 1950s, the state became a headquarters for the publishing of Christian education books. Many of the religious groups within the state have established colleges and universities to provide programs to further religious beliefs and prepare students for employment in secular fields. - Located on a 7-acre campus in Memphis, Crichton College is an interdenominational Christian college. The school is home to more than 900 students, approximately 87 percent of whom are Tennessee residents, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles on American Colleges. The school's largest degree programs are business management, elementary education and psychology. Courses are also offered in biology, chemistry, ministry, history, biblical studies and prelaw. Online courses are available for some programs of study. Chapel is held at the university weekly, and no classes are scheduled during the time it meets to encourage the attendance of all students and staff.
