Unless you are a citizen of the Gulf Co-operation Council you will require a visa to visit Abu Dhabi.
Some nationalities, including citizens from the United Kingdom and the United States will be able to gain an automatic visa on arrival.
This is usually valid for 60 days, which is extendable for a further 30 days for a fee.
Please check the local United Arab Emirates Embassy to check for up to date visa requirements for your nationality.
If you do require a visa, then your hotel will be able to assist with the paperwork.
For those on a last minute trip a visa can be arranged within 24 hour, but of course this will be more expensive.
Transit passengers may also require a visa, which lasts for 96 hours.
Your airline can assist with these, and at the time of writing, these were free of charge (although the airline may charge an administration fee).
Your luggage will be x rayed by customs and items such as DVDs, books and magazines maybe confiscated for further inspection and approval.
Pornography is banned in the UAE, so do not take any media that may fall foul of local laws.
You can carry any amount of currency into and out of the UAE, but you must declare your cash if it amounts to more than Dhs.

Failure to declare may be that you will be prosecuted under anti money laundering laws, which can mean a fine of up to Dhs.

Unless you are travelling from an area of Yellow Fever or Cholera, you do not require any health certificates before you can enter the UAE.

Malaria carrying mosquitoes are rare, but can occur in the mountains, so check with your doctor if you will be spending a larger amount of time in this area, and remember to cover up between dusk and dawn.
