How to Tie Different Fishing Knots

    The Six-Turn San Diego Jam

    • 1). Thread the fishing line through the eye of the fishhook. Pull 10 inches of line through the hole.

    • 2). Wrap the end around the line leading to the rod. Wrap the end around the line six times always wrapping the coils toward the hook. Make sure none of the coils overlap.

    • 3). Tuck the end through the loop near the eye of the hook.

    • 4). Pull the end and the line leading toward the rod to tighten the knot.

    The Arbor Knot

    • 1). Pull 24 inches of line from a fresh monofilament spool. Choose the line weight you wish to install on a new reel.

    • 2). Wrap the line around the central bobbin of the reel. Pull 12 inches of line free of the reel.

    • 3). Cross the end of the line with the line leading from the spool. Pass the end through the loop, making an overhand knot. Pull both ends of the line to tighten.

    • 4). Make a loop with the free end of the line. Wrap the end around itself and pass it through the loop created, making a second overhand knot just on the end. This prevents the end from sliding through the knot on the reel.

    • 5). Wind the new spool of line onto the reel.

    The Albright Knot

    • 1). Fold over the heavier of the two lines to be joined, making a loop. This knot is especially useful for joining two fishing lines of different weights.

    • 2). Hold both ends of the heavier line between the thumb and forefinger of your left hand.

    • 3). Insert the end of the second, lighter-weight fishing line through the loop. Slip the end of the lightweight line between your finger and thumb and hold the line 6 inches from the end.

    • 4). Wrap the end of lightweight line around the heavyweight loop 12 times. Make sure that no coils overlap and that there is still a small loop of the heavier line peeking from the end of the coils.

    • 5). Insert the tag end of the lightweight line through the loop in the heavyweight line that

      is left after wrapping.

    • 6). Pull the lightweight line that is attached to the rod to tighten the coils.

    • 7). Pull the attached lightweight line and the attached heavyweight line to tighten and test the entire knot. Trim the ends 1/2-inch from the knot.
