India Set to Become the Largest Exporter of Beef
India could soon become the largest exporter of beef, says the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). What's ironical about the USDA announcement is that eating beef is considered blasphemous by majority of India's population.
Hindus, who comprise majority of India's population, consider cows sacred and eating beef is like committing sacrilege for them because of which the domestic consumption of the meat remains quite low at 2.1 million tonnes a year.
United States, with one-fourth of India's population, consumes about 11.5 million tonnes of beef every year. This represents a huge opportunity for India to export the meat, which it seems to be taking advantage of if the USDA statistics are to be believed.
According to the USDA forecast, beef exports from India are likely to reach the 1.8 million tonne mark in 2013, which puts the country in the second place after Brazil as the largest exporter of beef. But bulk of India's beef exports is buffalo, which is less revered than the cow. The export of cow meat is banned in the country, though experts believe that some does find its way to foreign shores.
It will be interesting to see how the beef industry in the country is impacted if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power after next year's general elections. The party has been among the biggest critics of beef exports with its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi clearly expressing his opposition to the trade.
Modi is currently the Chief Minister of Gujarat, one of the many Indian states where cow slaughter is banned.
