How to Distinguish Between Conductors & Insulators
- 1). Connect the red lead of the multimeter to the socket marked "Voltage or "V+." Often, the socket will be color-coded.
- 2). Connect the black lead to the "COM" socket.
- 3). Set the multimeter's dial to measure resistance. Look for the Greek letter "omega," which resembles a horseshoe.
- 4). Touch the leads of the multimeter to either end of the object. According to the University of Washington, a reading of less than 25 ohms indicates electrical continuity and the material is likely a conductor.
