How to Make a Bonfire Without a Bonfire Pit
- 1). Find an area away from buildings, fences, trees and overhanging features such as electric wiring. Clear away rubbish, dead leaves and brush. Create a fire ring using rocks with a diameter of 4 to 5 feet.
- 2). Lay two logs in the center of the fire ring with a 1-foot gap between the logs. Place tinder between the logs. Lay three bundles of kindling on top of the tinder, leaning against the logs. Lay two more logs on top of the pile, perpendicular to the logs underneath.
- 3). Repeat the kindling and the laying of logs until the bonfire is knee-high. Place long pieces of kindling vertically on top of the bonfire. Place between three and four long logs inside the fire ring, surrounding the bonfire to form a tee-pee.
- 4). Place a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby, but not too close to the fire. Water the perimeter around the outside of the fire ring with a garden hose and repeat every hour that you keep the bonfire lit. Light the tinder at the bottom of the bonfire without touching the sides of the structure.
