How to Connect Four Prong 220 to a Three Prong Receptacle
- 1). Find the small cover plate on the back of the appliance and remove it using a Phillips screwdriver. You should see an electric terminal with three wires connected to three different screws.
- 2). Loosen the screws and remove the wires from the connectors.
- 3). Loosen the "strain relief" clamp at the back of the appliance where the power cord enters. Once the clamp is loose enough, pull the old cord out of the appliance.
- 4). Insert the new three-prong cord through the strain-relief clamp and into the appliance until the wires come out near the electrical connections. Once the cord is in the proper position, tighten the clamp.
- 5). Attach the three wires from the cord to the three electrical connections on the appliance. The middle wire on the cord is the neutral wire, and should be attached to the middle connector. The two outside wires are the hot wires, and one should be attached to each of the outside connectors. It does not matter which one goes where, as long as one of the hot wires goes on each of the outside connectors.
- 6). Attach a "bonding jumper" between the middle, neutral terminal and the frame of the appliance. The bonding jumper is a strip of copper designed to ground the circuit and prevent accidental shock when operating the appliance. Do not skip this step.
- 7). Replace the plate that covers the electrical terminals.
