How to Cite Websites in Outlines
- 1). List the author's name (last name first), followed by a period.
- 2). Place the article's title in quotation marks and end with a period.
- 3). Add the name of the website in italics, also followed by a period.
- 4). Add specific information to the article, such as revision numbers, volumes or posting dates.
- 5). Follow with the publisher’s name and the date of publication.
- 6). Add the page number, if there is one to cite.
- 7). Note the medium in which the article was published, the date you looked at the material and include the URL in angle brackets. MLA format does not require that you include URLs, but placing them in your outline makes finding them more convenient when it is time to write.
- 8). Examine your citation for accuracy. An example MLA website citation will look like this: Smith, John. “How to Build a Particle Accelerator.” (italics)Cool Science.com(/italics). Version 1.5. 2008. 21 May 2009. <http://www.coolscience.com/particleaccelerator>
- 1). List the author's name (last name first), and follow it with a period.
- 2). Put the date of publication in parentheses, also followed by a period.
- 3). Type the title of the article, then the website on which it appeared, with a period in between. The website should be noted in italics.
- 4). Note the volume and page if necessary.
- 5). Include the site URL after the words “Retrieved from.”
- 6). Check the citation for errors. A correct APA citation looks like this: Smith, John. (2007). How to Build a Particle Accelerator. (italics)Cool Science.com(/italics). Retrieved from http://www.coolscience.com/particleaccelerator
