How to Find Out When Someone Dies

104 56
    • 1). Visit the website Legacy.com, which contains archived obituaries from all over the United States, Canada and other countries, some dating back to the 1930s. Under the "Search Obituaries" box, type in the first and last name of the person you're looking for, choose what country they were from, and select the time frame in which you suspect the person died. Time frame options are within the last three days, within the past six months, from 2000-2009, and so on. Look through the names and obituaries the search results bring up and find the person you're looking for.

    • 2). Look through the obituaries section of your local newspaper to see the obituaries and death notices of people who have died within the last few days. You can also visit the official website of your local newspaper and look there, as most newspapers post obituaries online.

    • 3). Visit the genealogy website RootsWeb and search the Social Security Death Index it includes, which lists most of the names of U.S. citizens with a Social Security number who have died since 1962. Type in the first and last name of the person you are looking for, as well as where they were living, and press "Search." Look through the search results and find the person you are looking for.
