What Would Your Website Look Like?

If websites are our virtual homes then how would you decorate yours? Presumably you would choose a design that not only suits your personality and taste but also what you do. Of course, you would also have to consider your audience and what you think they would respond to. There are all kinds of free resources and applications on the internet that can help you build your online presence.

Websites:

Flavors.me is a great website where individuals can make their own homepages. They can choose from fonts, colours and backgrounds and customise the layout to suit their fancy. Users can add all of their favourite feeds, including social media platforms where they have profiles. Personal websites, or even just homepages, are great places to compile all of your information. If you have a blog, portfolio, YouTube channel and profiles on a variety of social media platforms you can compile them all into one place that is easily accessible for employers and prospective clients.

Blogs:

Blogs have become an extremely popular way for individuals to express themselves on any and every subject. It is recommended that people who start a blog do so as a way to express a passion and not because they are hoping it will award them fame, employment or money. If those things come, then great, but that should be an after-thought. A lot of passionate people register blogs and then just start writing. Even if you're using a public platform like Wordpress or Blogger, you can still choose a theme that suits you and your content. While it might not be entirely customisable, users can typically upload images, choose fonts and certainly do whatever they want with the content. Use these features to your advantage and make your blog something very unique.

Social Media:

Social media platforms are homes to all of your thoughts and conversational exchanges. They are where you go to interact with friends and people who share the same interests and ideas as you. Facebook is a platform dedicated to being all about its users. It holds their photos, interests, conversations and uploads all in one place. Twitter, is less multi-media, but there is a small profile space for users to write about themselves and list a relevant link. Creating a witty and descriptive strapline about yourself would be a good use of this space. Of course, really interested parties can always sift through all of your tweets, so make sure to tweet intelligently.

Don't sell yourself short. While you might not have thousands of followers on Twitter, or hits per day on your site it doesn't mean that people aren't paying attention to how it looks or what you're saying.
