How to Make the Most of a Flex Shaft

    • 1). Go to the driving range to get used to your new flexible shaft. Not only is it quicker and whippier to swing than a regular-shafted club, but it is most likely longer than your previous club as well. It feels signficantly different from your previous club and it will take time to get used to it. Go to the driving range three times a week when you first pruchase your flexible shafts.

    • 2). Notice how much the shaft will move during the downswing of the club. As a result of the speed and the movement, you will need to avoid swinging the club hard. Your hip turn will supply the extra speed needed to the club head.

    • 3). Emphasize your hip turn to get your swing started. The more you try to lead the swing with your hands the more trouble you are likely to have. In order to hit the ball accurately, turn your hips fully to the right and follow with your hands. When you have reached the top of your swing, begin your downswing by rotating your hips in the other direction.

    • 4). Stay down all the way through contact. The whippiness of the flexible shaft can result in a mis-hit if the golfer is not careful and concerned with hitting the center of the back of the ball.

    • 5). Finish your swing with a strong follow through. While you should not swing a flexible club by swinging it hard, you should snap your right hand through at impact. This will propel the ball to its maximum distance and should get the ball high. A high shot with backspin will fly further and should also stay on target.
