You're enjoying a pleasant Saturday afternoon when you suddenly hear a stampede rushing through the front door. The leader of the pack, usually one of your own children, declares that everyone is starving. Reach for easy snacks you and even the kids can put together in a snap. - Peanut butter is king.peanut butter on a cracker image by robert mobley from Fotolia.com
Peanut butter is king. When it comes to the perfect quick snack ingredient, you can pair it with almost anything. Unite it with that old standby--jelly--on whole wheat bread. Cut the sandwiches into triangles and serve with low-fat milk. You can also spread this kid staple on crackers, apples, bananas or celery for a healthy choice that won't leave the kids hyper from the sugar and carbs in jelly and bread. - Colorful veggie sticks encourage children to try them.celery image by cherie from Fotolia.com
Keep a supply of fresh vegetables and fruit on hand for these occasions. In minutes you can serve a smörgåsbord of raisins, sliced apples, oranges and bananas. Vegetables always look appealing when sliced and arranged on a plate. The colorful display of carrot sticks, celery, cucumber slices and even crunchy bell pepper strips will entice the children to give them a try.
Never include nuts in your fruit and vegetable snacks. A child who says he's only allergic to peanuts may indeed be allergic to cashews, pecans, almonds and other nuts. - Allow the kids to build their own snacks.cheese assortment image by Andrey Chmelyov from Fotolia.com
Allow the children to build their own snacks. Set out vanilla wafers, graham crackers and whole wheat saltines along with peanut butter, jelly, cheese, turkey slices, pickles and olives. The kids can build "nilla" wafer sandwiches with the peanut butter and jelly, or spread some on their graham crackers. They may enjoy stabbing a layer of cheese, turkey and olives with a toothpick to pop in their mouths. - Frozen treats are kid favorites.two boys with popsicles image by sonya etchison from Fotolia.com
Keep a supply of frozen fruit in your freezer to pull out for hungry children. Freeze grapes, chocolate-dipped bananas and strawberries. Insert toothpicks into the fruit before freezing to make this a treat small children can handle easily. Blueberries can be messy as they thaw in children's warm hands, so toothpicks will avoid purplish stains on the fingers. Frozen fruit juice pops are also a delectable treat children love to devour. Insert craft sticks into small cups of yogurt, or dip the yogurt into ice trays, cover with plastic wrap and poke with a toothpick. This healthy snack will leave kids begging for more.
