Nighttime in Niagara

103 49
The day quickly disappeared into the early evening dusk.
Dusk ushered in dinner being taken at the top of the Skylon tower revolving restaurant, looking out over the Niagara Falls.
Whipping up to the top in 52 seconds by a yellow elevator on the outside of the tower was exhilarating in itself.
The restaurant revolves completely in about an hour, this meal was not in our plans but a friend suggested it was a fun thing to do.
Accordingly, we did so and had to agree with him.
The meal we found took second place, behind the outstanding views that the tower provided.
We were lucky that the late afternoon skies were clear, the views amazing.
Watching the scenery change as the floor slowly revolved, powered by a three horsepower engine somewhere unseen, did not upset the stomach at all.
It was easy to understand why restaurant was well patronized! With filming and dinner finished, the observation deck was worth a look but having seen the same view from the comfort of the dining area, we did not linger for very long, it was also becoming a chilly evening.
The next thing on the bucket list was the illuminations held most nights until 10pm in the winter months and midnight during the summer.
Lighting the falls was first attempted 140 years ago and like all things public, took a while to arrange and organize.
They light up the falls most nights, rarely being switched off except on extreme occasions or necessity.
It paid to get a front position in order to watch the display.
We started early from the hotel as we thought, but there turned out to be crowds heading to the river to watch, taking up every vantage point possible.
The lighting was magnificent and photos taken really did not capture the scene.
The good humor of the crowds watching the illuminated falls, spread amongst everyone and as a result, we spent a lot of time enjoying the sights and sounds of the company and the dusk.
The promise of fireworks as well that evening kept the crowds of people waiting patiently, chatting with each other while enjoying the sights.
Then it was time for the fireworks! What a tremendous display of the universality of people's love of fireworks.
The ooh's and ahh's echoing right around the huge crowds watching the magnificent display blast into the illuminated air above the mighty Niagara Falls.
The fireworks display seemed to last a long time and it was all free! After the show, we wandered back to the hotel through the town of Niagara, A small tacky version of Las Vegas in my opinion, but at least there was plenty for people to do and see.
