How to Make a Graphic Design Portfolio
- 1). Select your best work. Show that you have skill and can produce good-quality work by including 10 to 15 of your best pieces in your portfolio.
- 2). Mount your work. Print your pieces on a high-quality printer or glossy paper, if your portfolio is primarily print design. Mount each piece on mat board. Mounting your artwork on black or a dark gray mat board will give your portfolio a feeling of substance and professionalism.
- 3). Purchase a portfolio case to organize your work in an orderly, professional manner.
- 4). Present your work creatively. Offer prospective employers a chance to view your work by having it printed in a professional-looking book through Shutterfly or Apple's iPhoto software.
- 5). Have a reason for each piece that you include in the portfolio. For example, if you've designed a lot of book covers, your portfolio will include primarily book covers. Include other types of artwork such as logos, brochures or website designs to show that you're capable of diversity.
- 6). Ask your friends to critique your graphic design portfolio. Friends who aren't designers and can give you an outsider's perspective.
- 7). Put your graphic design portfolio online. Choose a site such as Picasa, Flickr or Behance that will host your artwork for free, if you do not have your own website.
