    • 1). Look at an online listing of Army ribbons and medals that includes pictures. Note that decorations are commonly listed in order of precedence to help Army personnel and civilians understand their significance. The order of precedence is also reflected when soldiers wear ribbons and medals on certain uniforms.

    • 2). Read some interesting historical facts on how and why medals were established and follow developments from inception to medal authorization and enactment into law at the U.S. Congress. The HomeofHeroes.com website has broad legal and historical information relating to the establishment and use of all current medals.

    • 3). Recognize the significance of the colors and designs for ribbons and medals. Ribbons are typically striped. Red, white and blue together signifies the colors of our flag. Artists who design ribbons and medals give full details on the meaning they convey. For instance, Jay C. Morris, who designed the Prisoner of War medal, inscribed an eagle surrounded by barbed wire and bayonet tips. The eagle symbolizes the American spirit and the medal represents the hope to uphold the spirit of the prisoner.

    • 4). See regulations regarding order of precedence and wearing of decorations contained in Army Regulation 670-1. Additional information such as policy for awards, authorized approving entity and how decorations are issued are contained in AR 600-8-22.

    • 5). Note that awards are available in various forms and sizes. Medals are available in regular or miniature sizes and lapel button.

    • 6). Check out the inventory notation for decorations. Each unique award--whether a medal, ribbon or button--has a military inventory number and a National Stock Number (NSN). These inventory numbering systems are in place to readily identify and locate supplies when and where needed. Use these inventory numbers when ordering your ribbons and medals.
