Cat Collars - Think Before Buying

103 330
This isn't an article to say don't buy a cat collar as I feel that while some cat owners hate collars others find them very beneficial both for them and their cat.
So this post is more about the things to think about before spending your money on cat collars.
Since there is a huge range of collars available for your cat it's important you understand the different types so you can choose the best cat collar for your pet.
As well as looking and feeling different cat collars have different functions too.
So you should choose a collar by function, then narrow down the choices by colour, design, price etc.
Before micro chipping the collar was used to hold information about your kitty and who to contact if the cat was lost or found.
Now most cats are micro chipped so a collar isn't needed for this information.
Another use for a collar is to attach a small bell which would hopefully ruin your cat attempts at hunting small creatures which means less dead presents for you.
Cat collars have functions other than holding information such as flea collars which repel fleas.
I tend not to use these collars for my cats as they seem to irritate one of them so now they have flea drops such as Frontline for Cats.
You can buy reflective collars, these are perfect if you live by a busy road and your kitty likes to play out in the dark.
It should alert motorists that there's an animal in the area and hopefully prevent them from being run over.
A reflective cat collar is great for in the house too.
You should be able to see your cat in the dark even with minimal lights so if you have to get up in the middle of the night you wont trip over your cat.
Whatever function your cat collar has been bought to do, make sure it has an easy release mechanism in case your cat gets their collar stuck on something.
If this ever happens the collar should break open allowing your cat to free themselves without harm.
Also ensure that the collar isn't too tight, you should be able to get a finger in the space between the collar and your cat's neck.
It shouldn't be too loose either so if it can be slipped over the head, then tighten it up a little.
It's worth keeping an eye on the area under the collar to make sure it's not rubbing or causing discomfort.
