How to File for an Extension of Maryland Tax Returns
- 1). Call 410-260-7829 from central Maryland or the toll free number 1-800-260-3664 from outside the state to request forms or download them online from the state's website (see references).
- 2). File Maryland tax form 502E if you are an individual and need an extension of time to file. Maryland tax returns are due on April 15th. You can file online or mail it in. If you are making a payment with your extension, then enclose a check or money order for the amount you expect to owe. You may also opt to pay by credit card.
- 3). File Form 500E when filing for corporations and Form 510E when filing for an S Corporation. Usually, the corporations receive a seven-month extension when the request is filed by the due date. Partnerships, limited liability companies and business trusts use Form 510E all receive a six month extensions. As with individual returns, the corporate filing deadline is April 15th. In order for a limited liability company, C corporation or business trust to file electronically, they must have previously filed a Maryland Form 500 or 510 and must have an estimated balance due on line 5 of zero (0) on form 500E/510E. No extensions are allowed beyond the seven month period. The address for mailing is found below.
- 4). Write to the comptroller of Maryland if you are a person who is out of the United States or if you are filing an extension for an estate tax. Any request for an estate tax extension must be in writing and and must include a completed Form MET-1E, which is an Application for Extension of Time to File, a copy of IRS Form 4768 and the remittance of the estimated Maryland estate tax.
