Job Description for the Executive Director of a Non-Profit
- The Executive Director becomes the most recognizable and go-to personality within the organization almost immediately after hire. The Executive Director provides leadership, goals and vision for the organization's future and is responsible for properly communicating that vision internally and externally.
- Nonprofit organizations are reliant on fund-raising for a large portion of their operating funding. The Executive Director either sets the fund-raising strategy personally, or has a heavy hand in its creation. The Executive Director is often responsible for direct gift solicitation, especially from significant donors.
- Another crucial source of funding for nonprofits is grants. The Executive Director oversees the applications for and use of grant funding. It's imperative that the Executive Director ensures that such funding is being used within its restrictions.
- Nonprofits often have a board of advisors or trustees who advise and govern the organization. The Executive Director informs the board of the everyday operations of the organization, charts future growth for the board and makes major decisions alongside the board.
- Staff members may report directly or indirectly to the Executive Director. The Executive Director may make human resources decisions and set related policy. The Executive Director is often the decision maker concerning additions to or reductions of staff.
