3D Movie Making

    Components

    • All that is needed to make a 3D movie is two pieces of recording equipment (web cams or video cameras), a computer and 3D movie making software. In some cases, 3D glasses are required for viewing. The recording devices should both be placed on a stable surface, pointed in the same direction to film simultaneously, and spaced about 2.5 inches apart from the center of both lenses. Better pictures come from the right amount of depth, so whatever is being recorded should be 15 to 20 feet away from the cameras.

    Methods

    • Several different techniques can be used to turn what has been filmed into a three-dimensional movie. The anaglyph system either takes the two images and filters one through red coloring and one through cyan, where they become superimposed, or the images can be printed on white paper in the same colors. The eclipse technique uses a shutter and goes back and forth between images. At home, without all the fancy equipment, a 3D movie can be made with a computer and editing software. A time line will be provided in the program, and once both recordings are loaded onto the time line, the left image should be moved over the top of the right one. Once the color has been taken out of both videos so they become black and white footage, the color balance can be modified by turning the right one red and the left one blue.

    Results

    • 3D glasses are used with the anaglyph system, using one red lens and one blue lens to cancel out unnecessary colors and separate images. Separation is essential at first to create a depth effect, and then each eye is given a filtered colored picture. The specialized glasses bring it back to a single image in three dimensions. When the shutter is in use during the eclipse method, light is being blocked from one eye while the opposite eye's image is being displayed. This technique relies on the shutter being synchronized with the pictures on the screen. It's important to follow the instructions for color balance when making a three dimensional movie on the computer because it is the red coloring that is filtering out the red image, making the blue one visible, while the blue is filtered to make the red picture noticeable. With 3D glasses the visuals just made will become apparent.
