Retirements in Olden Days - Make It Happy Times
Retirement from service was an unknown word up to 19th century.
People worked all along their life span.
Death was one factor which removed the name from the work place.
Another thing was serious illness when one was forced to stay back home.
As long as one could walk or move around he continued at his work place.
The life expectancy was very low during those days.
The life style and the food habits reduced the life expectancy to a very great extent on those days.
Maintaining one's health was not of much importance.
There were no proper health care systems too.
Doctors or hospitals were few in numbers.
Even if hospitals existed, the people living far away, from villages could not reach for medical health since the available doctors were preferred to stay in towns for better income.
Most important thing was that general public was not exposed to what ever fewer medical facilities that were available then.
The living conditions then and that today are incompatible.
The facilities available then and those today are world apart.
All these points contributed considerably in reducing life expectancy of people on those days.
There were no pension plans.
There was no working place paying pensions to the employees to take care when they stopped working.
There was no specific program to support the people in their old age.
There was no medical support provided to them.
The aged people had to depend totally on their children during the difficult span of their life.
All these conditions prevailed during those days were the contributing factors for people to continue working till their last days or till they were not bed ridden.
In short, low life expectancy and no financial supports for the old people during the old age forced workers to work till death or serious illness.
Germany took the lead and introduced retirement ages and after retirement pension plans for its working class some time around 1880s.
It was in the 19th and 20th century that countries started fixing up specific retirement age.
Today almost all countries around the world have drawn up retirement plans and have formulated detailed legal supports.
The retirement ages in the same country in specific areas have a few years of variations though.
All institutions in are bound to follow the patterns applicable to that country.
When government run organizations have the retirement age comparatively at a lower age, private set ups allow workers to continue may be for another year or so.
Though the rules and regulations are varying from country to country it is a reality that almost all countries have introduced proper pension plans or retirement financial supports to the workers today.
When US have a normal retiring age as 67, United Kingdom has its normal retirement age as 65.
