Currently there is a huge push in the world to solve the illiteracy problem and finally all the groups coming together are making progress.
We are also making serious progress in the United States thanks to some of them government's initiatives.
If more people can read and write then they will have more productive and achieve a higher standard of living.
Additionally, the productivity in all the world's nations will go up because communication is a fundamental requirement in the flows of civilization.
In the United States people like Oprah, First Lady Bush and many other philanthropists have spent time, money and energy helping people learn to read and write and promoting literacy.
This is one of the greatest gifts we can give to help empower people.
I would also like to point out that Wal-Mart is helping literacy in many ways.
How so you ask?Well consider if you will the heavy discounting on back-to-school products; Paper, pencils, backpacks and such.
By offering these items at a very low price they are making it easier for parents to buy the supplies that the students need so they can learn.
A student with a new very cool looking backpack will look forward to going to school and take pride in learning.
And this is one of the very first steps.
You see literacy is everyone's problem.
When a person cannot read or write it is hard for them to communicate with us and we lose their productivity to our civilization and society.
