When people have to decide whether somebody is "beautiful" or not, they often use the persons hair as one of the criteria.
It's therefore understandable that baldness is a traumatic experience for most people.
The situation is even worse for women than for men.
There are many reasons for hair loss - we briefly outline a number of the main culprits below.
Your hair normally goes through a life cycle.
They grow for two to five years, then go through a resting period and after that fall out.
New ones are then produced by the follicles and the cycle is repeated.
When these follicles for some reason become unable to grow new ones, the result is baldness.
If baldness is hereditary in your family, you stand a much higher chance of becoming bald than other people.
What happens here is that for a yet unknown reason your body's testosterone binds with the enzymes found in the follicles and start to destroy them.
This of course renders them unable to produce a new mane, resulting in the well-known condition named Androgenetic alopecia also referred to as pattern baldness.
Ageing is another very common cause of baldness.
The reason is once again that the follicles become unable to grow the new curls we so badly want.
The result is the same as above, or it could even be complete baldness.
Something that not many people, especially women, realize is that exposing your coiffure to harmful chemicals for a prolonged period can cause baldness.
Examples of these are bleaching agents and coloring products.
They can eventually damage the follicles permanently.
A further potential cause of baldness is radiation and/or medication.
Chemotherapy as well as radiation can damage the follicles and cause them to shed large amounts of precious mane.
Certain types of medicines, e.
G.
Anti-depressants, beta blockers used for high blood pressure, contraceptives, arthritis medicine and some medicines used for gout can all cause baldness.
Hormonal problems can also be behind unexplained baldness.
If your body's female and male hormones, estrogens and androgens, are not in balance the result could be baldness.
Another culprit can be your thyroid gland.
An immune system disorder going by the name of Alopecia areata can also be responsible for your follicles stopping to function properly.
This can degenerate into alopecia totalis, in which case your head will become completely bald.
In severe cases this becomes alopecia universalis, in which case you lose all bodily hair.
From the above it is clear that the reasons for hair loss can be numerous.
You have to talk to a professional to discuss potential treatment.
There are indeed various medications on the market than can restore growth to a greater or lesser extent.
