Gay Versus Straight Research By Online Provider

With gay issues being topical in a number of countries recently, a refreshing market research by OkCupid provides some unemotional facts for us to look at.
These facts are data extracted from their database spanning North America, including Canada.
The provider runs an online dating agency and has collated data across the board from their the interests and answers of their users.
The first finding was that gay people are not sexually interested in straights.
This runs against some of the popular thinking that a gay person may convert a straight person, and may come as a surprise.
The provider searched through approximately four million match searches on the site and found a tiny minority, about 0.
1 percent of gay people, were interested at some point in the profile of a straight person.
And there were no gay users whatsoever who were primarily interested in straight people.
Interestingly enough, though, were the answers of straight people about bi-curiosity.
The provider asked 252,900 straight people if they ever had a sexual encounter with a person of the same sex.
And almost a quarter answered with Yes.
The provider broke the answers down further according to geographical location and found that the West and Canada had the greatest level of bisexual leanings.
It also found some pockets of bi-curiosity in the USA in places including Austin, Madison, and Asheville.
One answer that may come as surprising to most is that neither the average gay nor straight person has a large number of partners.
The provider found the Median Reported Sex Partners to be a mere 6 across the board.
This included straight men, gay men, straight women, and gay women.
However, what the research also found is that like many other things in life, the minority of people have the majority of what it is to be had, with a minority having a number of partners of 20 or more.
This minority is 1 percent of straight people and 2 percent of gay people.
Some other things came up from the research, such as interests and words used in speech.
For example, it was found that gay people and straight people generally fitted the stereotypes with regards to likes.
For example, gay people liked The Devil Wears Prada, Britney Spears, and Mean Girls; whereas straight people preferred Band of Brothers, Poker, and Cars.
The speech of gay people was further removed from the mainstream, while bisexuals were closer to the mainstream, with straight people the closest.
However, the provider made another comparison, using the Indian community, and found the Indians to be furthest from the mainstream with regards to speech.
So perhaps the words and phrases used by the provider´s customers is a minorities issue rather than one of sexuality.
Basically, this research shows what the average OkCupid customer does and is interested in.
There are variations to the average, of course, but this data is certainly illuminating.
Considering how it did the rounds on Facebook, it seems that people find it helpful too.
We are all curious to find out if we belong, and what others are doing, whether the others are gay or straight, men or women.
