You can visit all six islands if you want, or simply laze around on the one of your choice. Each is unique with its own character, and each is a joy to visit.

You will likely visit Oahu on any Hawaii vacation, since it is the hub for most flights to and from the archipelago. However, the island has a lot to offer, and Oahu is the main tourist island containing Waikiki Beach and Honolulu, the Hawaiian state capital. Here you will also find Pearl Harbor. Among the many historical attractions is the museum in honor of the USS Arizona, displaying many artifacts pertaining to the 1941 attack.

Kauai is the most northerly island in the archipelago, and is also the oldest of the islands of Hawaii. This is a romantic island renowned for its natural beauty, and is also great for an outdoor adventure getaway for visitors of all ages. The famed Coconut Coast is on the east side of the island, with its marvelous sandy beaches that are treat for sunbathing and relaxing, or if you travel over to the west side of the island you will find what is referred to as the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific' - the Waimea Canyon. Nearby is the Kokee State Park, a park of great natural beauty offering several trails that can be followed to view some of the rarest birds in Hawaii and also plants that grow only in the rainforest.

To the south of Oahu is the island on Molokai, which is home to a large number of native Hawaiians who have remained closely connected to their cultural heritage and traditional way of life.

Lanai is less populated than the rest of the islands, and is ideal for a quiet and peaceful Hawaii vacation. Life is much slower paced on Lanai, there are no traffic lights to annoy you and it is perfect if you want privacy and a more romantic vacation that you get on Oahu. Lanai also offers two good golf courses.

Then we come to Maui, the second largest Hawaiian island. This island is in the middle of the humpback whale's migration route, so is great for whale watching at the right time of year during the winter. The beaches here are fabulous, and the first choice for many people wanting a peaceful beach vacation.

Unsurprisingly, the largest island of the Hawaiian archipelago is called the 'Big Island'. This offers more area of land than all the other islands combined, and has 11 of the 13 climatic zones of the world. It offers features as diverse as sandy beaches, snowy mountains and an active volcano. A great and unique place to visit on your Hawaii vacation.

If you are unable to make your mind up as the island you want to visit, then try them all. You can book an island cruise that starts at Honolulu and then spends 1.5 days on each island. You will spend the nights on your luxury cruise liner, and take in the best that the entire Hawaiian archipelago has to offer.
