How to Install & Troubleshoot Motion Detector Lights
- 1). Secure the first components of your new motion detector light to the wall. A mounting strap screws on top of the electrical box to help you securely mount the new fixture. If you're installing exterior motion lights, secure the watertight gasket to the wall so the electrical wiring doesn't get wet during a storm.
- 2). Connect the wires for your new light to the wires in your electrical box. To ensure a safe grounding connection, wrap the green ground wire from your electrical around the green screw inside the new light. Tighten the screw to ensure that the wire stays in place. Twist together the white neutral wires and the black hot wires, then use wire nuts around each pair to twist the bare wires together and make the connections necessary to send power from the electrical box to the new light.
- 3). Mount your light fixture to the wall by screwing through the base of the fixture and into your mounting strap. Insert a lightbulb and turn the fixture on when you finish installing it.
- 1). Slide the Sensory Adjustment Dial, located on the bottom of the motion detector light, to Medium, and slide the switch next to it to the Test position.
- 2). Turn on the light switch that powers the motion detector light. The lightbulb should come on when you flip the switch, and the light will automatically shut off after about 30 seconds if there's no movement in front of the motion sensor.
- 3). Aim the sensor in the location you desire so it will detect motion, then walk across the line of sight to test it out. If you want the sensor to detect motion closer, move the dial to Low. If you want the motion sensor to detect motion farther away, move the dial to High.
- 4). Slide the Test switch back to its original position once you finish troubleshooting your motion detector light.
