Throughout history, women have been trying to select shoes that are comfortable, fit properly and reflect their own personal style. In centuries past, women often had to sacrifice comfort for style, or vice versa. From simple moccasins to elaborate stiletto heels, women have hundreds of styles and brands to choose from. Fortunately, some shoes offer both comfort and style.

    Birkenstock

    • Birkenstock began in Germany in 1897 with a shoe design that incorporated a contoured footbed. The patented cork footbed, which is still in use today, contours to the shape of the wearer's foot, providing support and shock absorption. Since Birkenstocks were first imported to the U.S. in 1966, the company has expanded to offer a full line of sandals, shoes and clogs in a variety of colors, patterns and designs.

    Cole Haan

    • Cole Haan, initially a men's shoe brand, now also produces women's casual, dress and business shoes, including sandals, walking shoes, flats, loafers and pumps. Many of their designs incorporate Nike Air technology for cushioning and support. Air technology combined with excellent craftsmanship and high-quality materials result in comfortable, durable shoes. Cole Haan shoes are sold online at Colehaan.com, at Cole Haan stores and at high-end retailers.

    Dr. Scholl's

    • Founded by Dr. William Matthias Scholl in 1968, the brand has been dedicated to providing comfortable shoes that alleviate foot pain. Dr. Scholl's initially sold wooden exercise sandals in the 1960s and '70s, then began producing fashion footwear in the 1990s. Today, Dr. Scholl's offers a full line of women's shoes, including flats, sandals, clogs, pumps, boots and walking shoes.

    Easy Spirit

    • Easy Spirit designs women's shoes with anti-gravity technology that absorbs and distributes shock. Easy Spirit shoes are available in a variety of sizes and widths and include sneakers, casual shoes and dress and business styles. Easy Spirit has been in business for 20 years and is owned by Jones Apparel Group.

    Ecco

    • Since its founding in Denmark in 1963, Ecco has produced high-quality comfort footwear. The company offers a complete line of innovative women's styles, including sandals, walking shoes, flats and pumps, with designs appropriate for athletics, casual wear and business. Ecco has pioneered a special technology for attaching the upper to the sole, resulting in a light, flexible shoe. The entire ecco line can be viewed and purchased at ecco.com.
